STATEMENT ON WORLD AIDS DAY

As the world observes AIDS day the regime ion Ethiopia is giving out self congratulatory statements on the campaign to control the spread of AIDS in Ethiopia. Factual investigation belies the statements of the regime--AIDS is not under control in Ethiopia.

With more than 3.5 million people afflicted by the disease the daily death rate is conservatively estimated at 415 with more than 53% of these being women. Daily infection rate that was said to be around 400 in 2006 has also increased. The prevailing catastrophic social and economic condition has militated for the spread of AIDS. The official organizations that claim to combat the spread of AIDS are money making means for the spouse of the Prime Minister and other officials. Thousands of street children exposed to rape and child prostitution, rising unemployment aggravating hopelessness, desperation, the spread of drugs, lack of education and extensive campaign, the collapse of the health system  have all facilitated the spread of AIDS. The rural population, especially young females, are exposed more and more to the AIDS epidemic.

Thus, as the world observes AIDS Day it is important to note that the repressive and callous system in Ethiopia is helping in the spread of AIDS all over Ethiopia.
