AUGUST 15/2005 URGENT COMMUNIQUE SUDAN TO DEPORT 12 ETHIOPIAN SOLDIERS The government of the Sudan ahs secretly decided to deport to Ethiopia 12 Ethiopian soldiers who had sought refuge in Kassala, Sudan, five months ago. The soldiers threatened by the deportation are the following:
1. Dereje Bogale 2.Walelign Melkie 3. Abdi Idris 4.Semere Aweke 5.Derin Endalew 6.Alebachew Mengistu 7. Solomon Tesfaye 8.Mohamed Abdelkadir 9.Abdullahi Seyid 10.Jemal Ahmed 11.Mamo Enyew 12. Ibrahim Ali
The above had earlier defected to Eritrea but they were forced by the regime there to join an armed Ethiopian opposition group. They fled to the Sudan to seek asylum and were in Kassala town for the last five months. Sudan's government has dealt with the EPRDF regime in Addis Ababa and even allowed EPRDF security officials to photograph the refugee soldiers in their detention cells. The decision to deport the soldiers has been taken and Ethiopian refugees in the Sudan and their organization has launched a campaign top block this act from taking place.
SOCEPP calls on the government of the Sudan to cancel the deportation decision as the soldiers would face repression and even death if sent back to Ethiopia. The Sudanese government had in the past deported Ethiopian refugees to their deaths and it is high time it desists from such a condemnable act. SOCEPP calls on Ethiopians in the Diaspora to launch an immediate and vigorous protest action to stop the deportation of the Ethiopian soldiers. SOCEPP appeals to the UNHCR and to all human rights bodies to express/send their protest to the government of the Sudan.
