Statement on the International Day Against the Use of Torture

June 26 is the international day of protest against the use of torture and SOCEPP joins all those who are against the use of torture to condemn the ongoing practice and the use of cruel and inhuman punishment. As far as brutal torture is concerned, one of the rogue States is none other than Ethiopia where the group in power has a long history of horrible acts of torture. In Ethiopia, torture is routine and it accompanies the interrogation of many detained persons. Torture is also used for vindictive purposes, to cold-bloodedly hurt , to terrorize others. Many prisoners have had their arms amputated, many others have lost their eyes, the use of their legs, etc.

The ruling group has also the particular practice of digging holes deep in the ground and keeping prisoners in there, in the dark, incommunicado. Physical and psychological torture are the trademarks of the EPRDF government. SOCEPP calls on the government in Ethiopia to stop the practice of torture and to release all prisoners detained under inhumane conditions. SOCEPP also raises its voice against all those governments who still practice torture for one reason or another and calls on all to stop this decline into barbarism
